It was like she turned from nurse to child life for a few minutes. She then went back into nurse mode because my daughter was still not having it and was crying, saying she was so scared.
My 9-year-old daughter has been having left wrist pain for a couple of months, and this weekend the pain just got worse. We sat in the waiting room for almost 4 hours before being placed in a room. Once in the room, Nalexian came in and apologized for the long wait with explanations of not only being very busy with patients but also having just been switched to a new charting system, Epic. I appreciate the honesty because it helps us as parents understand. Next, she told us the plan and that my daughter would require labs. Hearing this, my daughter instantly started crying and getting anxious. This was her first real experience in the ER, she has never had labs or an IV in her life. She was so scared. This nurse went above and beyond. She left the bucket with the lab stuff away from her and took time to explain everything in detail. She explained that we needed to assess what was going on inside her body so that we could help her get better. It was like she turned from nurse to child life for a few minutes. She then went back into nurse mode because my daughter was still not having it and was crying, saying she was so scared. My daughter would not compromise, and I was thinking, “We are not going to get these labs.” Nalexian and I recognized there was no compromising, so she called a friend, and we just had to hold her down and get it done. Nalexian got the IV on the first stick and dressed it with a teddy bear bandage and praised my daughter for such a good job getting it done. Afterwards, she came back to not only check on us but also brought my daughter a popsicle and me some water because she knew that moment was a lot. I appreciate her patience and compassion. That is what this award is about. It had not only been a long day for us but for her as well, but she didn’t show it. She still took care of my daughter like she was her only patient. I really appreciate her and think she is so deserving of this award.
