Morgan's interactions with patients, other nurses, and providers demonstrate respect; her careful assessments show excellence; her charting practices show integrity; her tender care shows compassion; and every interaction demonstrates professionalism.
During her time working with me on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Morgan consistently demonstrated advanced critical thinking skills and a calm demeanor in challenging situations, as well as careful consideration of our patients' cultural and spiritual needs, embodying the UMMC values of integrity, respect, excellence, compassion, and professionalism.
More than once during her time with me, Morgan noted subtle changes in our patients' assessments and made connections about their conditions that I would have expected from an already practicing nurse.
One example was that Morgan noted some slight changes in the patient during focused assessment, and when an MRI was completed, it showed that the patient had a condition directly related to those symptoms that could have otherwise been overlooked. Morgan's excellent assessment skills led to that patient receiving a diagnosis and treatment for the condition earlier than would otherwise have been the case.
One particular patient we cared for was of a different ethnic and religious background from Morgan. One cultural difference was dietary, and Morgan consistently checked the food trays before taking them to the patient to ensure they did not contain any items the patient could not eat.
Morgan also engaged with the patient's family members to learn about their cultural and spiritual practices. One of those practices was that, before being hospitalized, the patient regularly cleansed themselves for the temple, but during hospitalization, the patient became unable to perform their own hygienic care.
The patient was unable to communicate this to us, but when a family member informed Morgan of it, she made it a practice to tenderly and thoroughly wash the patient every day. Although the patient was often distressed at baseline, they always settled into a peaceful sleep as Morgan washed their face.
It was clear that this was very meaningful to the patient, even though the patient was unable to communicate. One evening, very close to shift change, a patient had an emergent reaction to a blood product. Morgan calmed and comforted the patient and their family member as we handled the reaction, handed me all the supplies I needed, and took care of the patient's vital signs and labs.
Her demeanor considerably soothed an emergent situation. She stayed far after shift change with me as we continued to care for the patient, even though I told her more than once that it would be okay for her to go. It was important to her to see the situation settled because she cared about the patient and the family member.
After that incident, the patient asked about Morgan every day, and even when we were not assigned that patient, Morgan stopped in the patient's room every day to say hello.
Morgan's interactions with patients, other nurses, and providers demonstrate respect; her careful assessments show excellence; her charting practices show integrity; her tender care shows compassion; and every interaction demonstrates professionalism.
Morgan has been a joy to precept, and she will undoubtedly be an excellent nurse. I'm looking forward to watching her blossom in a career that is clearly her calling.
