I am a PCT on the 5th floor med/surg unit at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. I met Monica in April of 2025 when I moved to this unit. Monica has been going above and beyond since the second I met her. Between putting on music before doing care with patients to help calm them, moving her WOW into a hospice patient's room so they do not pass alone, or advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
One specific example is a male in his mid 70's that we cared for together. The patient had come up from our ICU, directly to med-surg, as we do not have a step-down unit. This patient started to deteriorate, and I alerted Monica. She jumped into action, calling the MD, asking others' opinions, and grabbing the charge nurse. She suggested testing to be ordered and new medications. Monica advocated for this patient to be transferred down to our telemed/surg floor, so he could be under more intensive care and monitoring.
Some said she was being overly cautious and that the patient didn’t need telemonitoring. Later that day, it was reported that the patient had suffered a significant GI bleed, and his distress was caught by the telemetry monitors. This led to blood transfusions and being transported by helicopter to a more equipped hospital. Without Monica's intense yet polite advocacy for this patient, I don’t believe things would have gone the way they did, as our med-surg unit is unmonitored.
It may not seem like an intense story, but I assure you that Monica goes above and beyond. It makes my day when I see that I am working with her. If it ever came down to it, if I needed to be cared for by anyone, I would choose Monica. Every single hospital unit needs a Monica.
