I have had the pleasure of working with Monica during both the gerontology practicum as well as during her senior internship in the PICU. Whether it be using her creativity in caring for an Alzheimer's patient in the pulmonary special care unit at St. Luke's hospital, working with an individual in their final days at the Bird House Hospice Home, or caring for critically ill children in the PICU at UIHC, Monica has demonstrated her extraordinary kindness and compassion. Monica is an extremely hardworking and dedicated student who strives to deliver high-quality care, and who also clearly sees each patient as an individual. Through her ability to connect with her patients and their families, she has met not only their physical needs but emotional and spiritual needs as well. Monica is intellectually curious and is constantly seeking ways to improve her knowledge and skills and she is able to skillfully blend both the science and art of nursing to provide high-quality care. She had an especially difficult situation this semester in the PICU as she cared for a baby who was taken off life support. I will never forget her describing this experience of lovingly caring for this family and being grateful for the privilege of accompanying them during this very difficult time. Monica is extremely sensitive to the needs of those around her. I was personally touched by her kindness last year at this time, as I cared for a good friend whom I accompanied during her final days. Monica's kindness and caring nature will not only touch all those for whom she cares but those who will have the good fortune to be working with her. Her humility, gentleness, self-awareness, and generosity will be a source of strength and comfort to all those in her path. It has truly been a delight to work with Monica this past year.
