I have to recognize Mickey for the exceptional care, going above and beyond in the care of an incredibly vulnerable young lady who was recovering from a lifetime of abuse and sex trafficking. Like most victims of trafficking and extreme abuse, this patient had several mental health issues, trust issues, as well as medical issues.

This young lady had expressed the desire to leave against medical advice, which would have made the patient ineligible to return to her recovery home, a program she later expressed was her last chance. This patient was distraught, not wanting to stay and wanting to leave to stay on the streets if needed.

Mickey spoke to the case manager of the patient, who expressed concern that the patient would harm herself if allowed to leave. Mickey responded with not only clinical expertise, but with remarkable compassion, patience, and understanding. Mickey took the time to truly listen, to validate the patient’s fears, and to create a sense of safety and trust that allowed the patient to reconsider her options with clarity. Mickey took the time to let this patient know that she mattered, that she was loved, and that she was cared for.

These are things victims of abuse often can’t see. Mickey’s ability to navigate this situation with grace and empathy likely made a life-changing difference. Mickey’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact compassion can have. I am so proud of how Mickey cared for this precious soul and to work along with such an amazing nurse.
