August 2026 Honoree
Michelle Aucott, BSN, RN
I have been coming to the OIC at Virginia Mason for over a year now. Because I come in 3x a week, every week, I've had the blessing of getting to know the nurses on the unit and forming meaningful bonds with them. Over the years, as a patient with chronic illnesses, I have experienced medical trauma. Coming into the clinic as much as I do and developing these relationships has allowed me to begin healing that trauma. The OIC has become a safe place for me, created by the nurses and staff, allowing me a rough 6 hours a week. I know I can relax and actually 'turn off.' That time and space is indescribable and the care these nurses provide is pricelessly irreplaceable.
One of the nurses who has helped develop this environment that is so precious to me is Michelle Aucott. Beyond her attention to detail and memory (e.g., I require sensitive dressing), Michelle's gentle protectiveness has meant so much to me. During a difficult time when I was having difficulty with another medical provider, Michelle not only listened, but she encouraged me to advocate for myself to ensure I receive the right and best care. She would check on me even if I wasn't her patient that day, and it meant so much. I was spiraling out in a situation with a medical provider, and Michelle's ensuring I knew I deserved better gave me permission to advocate for myself. I will forever be grateful for Michelle.

Thank you, Michelle, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
