July 2026 Honoree
Michel Beard, BSN, RN, CEN
Michel showed immense compassion for a patient with developmental disabilities. The patient was perseverating on riding the elevator; it is his favorite activity. The patient enjoys riding elevators whenever he can. The patient had a significant laceration requiring repair but was seeking to exit to the elevator.
Michel recognized the needs of the patient, making a bargain with the patient to take his medicine, and in exchange she promised a ride in the elevator. The patient had the medication, and Michel arranged for security to accompany her and the patient to the elevator on a gurney. The patient rode the elevator up and down a few times while becoming relaxed enough for the medications to take effect. When they returned to the room, the patient was calm and ready for his procedure.
Michel recognized the psycho/social needs of the patient and facilitated a way to meet his needs. This was not only an above and beyond moment, this was a moment of true compassion to meet the needs of a patient that may otherwise be viewed as difficult or challenging.
She eased his anxiety while meeting his needs, nursing qualities that are admirable and set an example for how nursing care can be modified to improve the patient's experience despite the obstacles.
Thank you, Michel, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
