Mike approached with kindness, asking if the man needed help.
It was the end of the day in the Cath Lab when Mike was walking through Central's main entrance. Most people might have walked by without a second glance, but Mike’s sharp eye and caring nature wouldn’t allow that. He noticed a man wearing only a bathrobe, dragging a full Foley catheter bag behind him. Something didn’t feel right.

Mike approached with kindness, asking if the man needed help. The man explained he thought he had a doctor’s appointment. Rather than make assumptions, Mike took action. He contacted the House Supervisor, who advised him to work with Security. Partnering with Security and Registration, Mike was able to identify the man and then learn that the man had a history of dementia, and unfortunately, he did not have a doctor's appointment that day.

In that moment, Mike knew it wouldn’t be safe for the man to drive himself home. He was confused, vulnerable, and in a state of undress. Acting quickly but with great compassion, Mike reached out to the man’s wife. He stayed with the gentleman until she could be reached and then personally escorted him to the Emergency Department, ensuring he was treated and cared for.

Mike’s actions that day were more than just part of his job—they were a reflection of his character. He preserved the man’s dignity, protected his safety, and approached the situation with respect and empathy. He didn’t see a problem to solve; he saw a person who needed to be cared for.

This is the very essence of nursing excellence.
