Melissa demonstrated the perfect balance of experience, skill, compassion, and empathy in every single interaction she had with me (my family) and my roommate. She made an incredibly challenging time as comfortable as possible in a hospital setting. I was fortunate enough to have her for 3 consecutive daytime shifts. I also had the stark contrast of the nurses, both before and after her care. I think the perishable/soft skills she brought to work can not necessarily be taught in a classroom (but perhaps observed/mentored on the floor). Any student or colleague is/would be fortunate to work with her as a part of the team, certainly, albeit perhaps not measurable by science, her post-op direct care style and approach have assisted me and many others in feeling well sooner rather than later.
