She understood that while I had gone through physical trauma, he had endured his own emotional turmoil, and her thoughtful reminder showed just how deeply she cares for the entire family unit.
As someone who works in healthcare, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing many incredible nurses over the years—but Melissa Stephens stands out in a truly remarkable way. Her swift clinical judgment, calm demeanor, and deep compassion made an unforgettable impact on one of the most important—and most frightening—days of our lives. Even five weeks later, her presence is still vivid in my mind, and I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the role she played in our baby girl's safe arrival.
Our labor had already lasted over 25 hours by the time Melissa’s shift began. It was as if the stars aligned when she walked into the room. My water broke at the start of her shift, and from that moment on, Melissa was attentive, steady, and reassuring. She noticed our baby’s heart rate was dropping with each contraction, and immediately helped reposition me to encourage the baby to settle safely. She communicated every step clearly, especially during the epidural, making sure I knew what was happening while offering calm reassurance. When Melissa recognized that it was time for my OB to intervene, she didn’t sugarcoat the situation—but she didn’t cause panic either. She prepared me for the urgency and commotion that was about to unfold. Amid the chaos, she continuously checked in, making sure I felt heard and supported. When we were rushed to the OR, and panic overwhelmed me, Melissa didn’t dismiss my fear—she validated it. She told me it was okay to cry and worry. As a mom herself, she understood, and that acknowledgment meant everything.
After our daughter was delivered, I experienced my own complications and lost consciousness. During those hours I couldn’t be present, Melissa was there—not only for me, but for my partner. She ensured he knew I was in capable hands, supported him in those precious first moments with our newborn, and reminded him to take photos so I wouldn’t miss them completely. That small but thoughtful gesture still brings tears to my eyes. Melissa stayed with us until I came to hours later. Gently, she filled me in on everything that had happened—but more importantly, she made sure I checked in with my partner. She understood that while I had gone through physical trauma, he had endured his own emotional turmoil, and her thoughtful reminder showed just how deeply she cares for the entire family unit.
Melissa Stephens is the kind of nurse every patient hopes for—clinically astute, deeply compassionate, and unshakably calm in a crisis. She kept me grounded in chaos, held space for our emotions, and ensured we felt safe and seen in one of the most vulnerable times of our lives. It’s taken me a few weeks to write this nomination because I’ve been soaking up every moment of motherhood—moments I might not have had if not for Melissa’s fast thinking and exceptional care.
Melissa, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You are an earthly angel, and will always be remembered!
