She’s the “unit mom” - someone who knows exactly how to help anyone and everyone, no matter the situation.
I have never met a nurse quite like Melissa. Her positive, proactive energy seems to bring healing to every patient she encounters. Melissa is a true advocate, fully attuned to her patients’ needs and emotions. She leads with confidence, prepares in-services for nursing students, and enthusiastically represents our profession at local health fairs, where I’ve enjoyed working alongside her, taking blood pressures and glucose checks.
Melissa never complains, never speaks negatively about herself or her circumstances, even though she has every reason to feel overwhelmed after a demanding shift. Her resilience and optimism are remarkable.
While it’s hard to capture specific examples of her compassion and nursing intuition, because they are present in every interaction, the truth is that all of her patients receive exceptional care. Over the five years I’ve worked with her, I’ve witnessed Melissa’s quick thinking save countless lives by ensuring patients are transferred promptly for the care they need, all while offering comfort and guidance to their families. She has a unique ability to help families understand when a patient may need hospice or a more palliative approach, always with empathy and clarity.
Her colleagues on the ARC often say, “Give them to Melissa - she’ll fix them.” That phrase speaks volumes about her skill, dedication, and commitment to patient care.
***
Melissa consistently goes above and beyond to care for her patients. With her extensive background in orthopedics, home health, and hospice, she brings a wealth of knowledge and intuition to every situation. On the ARC unit, she not only provides exceptional care but has saved lives in moments where others might have missed critical signs. We all know that if a patient is seriously ill and likely needs readmission to the acute side, Melissa will make it happen, while ensuring that the patient sees another day.
Just the other day, a gentleman who was lost wandered onto the unit searching for his appointment. Without missing a beat, Melissa took the initiative, calling the facility, confirming his destination, and ensuring the staff there were prepared for his arrival. This quick, thoughtful action perfectly reflects the compassion and resourcefulness she demonstrates every single day.
As her coworker, I always know I’ll have her support in caring for our patients. She’s the “unit mom” - someone who knows exactly how to help anyone and everyone, no matter the situation.
