Nomination:

We had a patient in our unit who took a turn for the worse and decisions were made by the family to withdraw cares and help make the patient comfortable. The family expressed to Melissa that the patient's wishes would be to pass away peacefully at home with his dog. Melissa empathetically told the patient's wife that she could unfortunately only honor one of those wishes because the patient would not make it long enough to get home. However, she assured she would do everything she could to make the experience comfortable and peaceful for the patient and family. Melissa made arrangements for the patient's dog to come up to ICU so the patient could be with his dog.

In addition, one of the patient's grandsons living in another state was obviously not going to be able to make it but wanted to be with his grandpa and say his goodbyes. Melissa suggested using Face Time in order for the grandson to "virtually" be there with his grandfather. The family had not thought of that and Melissa helped the family get Face Time set up and the grandson was able to talk to his grandpa, say goodbye and be with the rest of his family.

The family was extremely thankful for Melissa and all her efforts! Melissa displayed tremendous compassion and patient/family-centered care and her efforts made the world of difference for this patient and his family.

Nomination:

Melissa was able to explain details about my son who had head trauma surgery,so that I understood what was going on. She is a great nurse, very patient, very understanding, and very helpful. She is very deserving of the award. Thanks for all her help.
