Melissa was the primary nurse for a 26-day-old baby girl who presented with vomiting and diarrhea. While these symptoms alone were concerning, Melissa recognized that something more serious might be going on when she noticed the baby was also jaundiced.

Trusting her clinical judgment and experience, Melissa strongly advocated for further labs and evaluation. Because of her persistence and attention to detail, additional labs and an ultrasound were ordered, which confirmed biliary atresia. The patient required a stat transfer to Georgetown for specialized care.

The baby underwent initial surgery and ultimately required a liver transplant. Today, she is growing and developing normally, is followed by a team of specialists, and no longer requires feeding tubes.

Melissa’s critical thinking, advocacy, and commitment to patient care made a life-changing difference for this child and her family. Her ability to recognize subtle warning signs and push for further evaluation directly contributed to early diagnosis and life-saving treatment. I truly believe Melissa’s actions are a major reason this baby is alive and thriving today.

Melissa consistently demonstrates compassion, strong clinical judgment, and unwavering dedication to her patients. We are incredibly fortunate to have her on our unit, and she is more than deserving of DAISY recognition for the impact she makes every day.

Thank you, Melissa, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
