Her leadership has fostered a culture of de-escalation and safety, integrating mental health expertise into various hospital units and setting a new standard for behavioral health care.
Melissa's ability to inspire collaboration, implement evidence-based strategies, and achieve measurable results has elevated care for patients with behavioral and mental health needs. Melissa has been an unwavering advocate for patient and staff safety, particularly in leading groundbreaking initiatives to reduce workplace violence across the health system. One of her most impactful initiatives was leading the Workplace Violence Reduction Bundle Pilot, which resulted in a dramatic reduction in violent incidents and an increase in the use of therapeutic interventions. Her efforts led to an 87.4% increase in agitation management orders and a 22.6% decrease in violent restraints, with zero workplace violence events reported during the pilot.

Melissa also leads the Mental Health Response Nurse (MHRN) Team, which has achieved an 85% success rate in Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) calls, well above the industry standard. This success has prevented over 1,400 restraint events, emphasizing her commitment to proactive, compassionate care. Her leadership has fostered a culture of de-escalation and safety, integrating mental health expertise into various hospital units and setting a new standard for behavioral health care.

Beyond clinical outcomes, Melissa is deeply invested in professional development. She has helped numerous nurses achieve board certification in psychiatric-mental health nursing by securing scholarships and leading review courses. Her dedication to education has built a highly skilled and confident team. Additionally, she has played a key role in developing new care environments like GBay and WakeBrook, which prioritize healing and dignity for mental health patients.
