Compassion is at the heart of Melissa’s work. She has a unique ability to empathize with patients and families while maintaining her focus and effectiveness.
I would like to nominate Melissa Gardner for the DAISY Award. After reviewing the nomination criteria, I realized that Melissa not only meets the qualifications for this prestigious recognition but far exceeds them. She embodies the highest standards of nursing excellence and serves as an inspiration for aspiring nurses.
Melissa demonstrates exceptional care by consistently going above and beyond for her patients. She never hesitates to take on challenging cases that require extra time and effort to resolve. I often hear her on the phone with families struggling to understand their child’s medical care. With patience and empathy, she repeats explanations and finds new ways to communicate until the family feels confident in managing their child’s care. Many GI patients leave the clinic with complex care instructions that can be overwhelming for non-medical caregivers. When families call for clarification, Melissa takes the time to walk them through each step, ensuring they fully understand before ending the call. I know from experience that this requires immense patience and dedication. Despite the time-consuming nature of these calls, she remains calm, reassuring, and committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for her patients.
Melissa also excels in care coordination, following through on every request for assistance. She proactively facilitates communication among team members, ensuring that all necessary tasks are completed to benefit the patient. It is common to see her checking in with providers, colleagues, and families to confirm that all aspects of care have been addressed. Her diligence and attention to detail contribute significantly to improved patient outcomes.
Compassion is at the heart of Melissa’s work. She has a unique ability to empathize with patients and families while maintaining her focus and effectiveness. She addresses difficult situations with sensitivity, ensuring that families feel supported even in challenging moments. I have witnessed her following up with families the next day to check on a patient’s progress, demonstrating her genuine care and commitment beyond the immediate visit.
One particular case stands out. A young patient with a history of multiple surgeries required urgent coordination between Seattle and Tri-Cities providers. Melissa took on the complex task of arranging emergency care in Seattle and ensuring seamless follow-up back in Tri-Cities. This process took hours of work, but her persistence resulted in a positive outcome for the child. The patient’s mother expressed immense gratitude, stating that Melissa had gone above and beyond in coordinating her son’s care.
Melissa is an exemplary role model for the Tri-Cities healthcare team and the nursing profession. Her passion for nursing is evident in everything she does. I have witnessed moments where the emotional weight of her work is visible, yet she always composes herself and remains steadfast in her commitment to her patients. In my years of experience, I have rarely encountered a nurse as dedicated and compassionate as Melissa.
Tri-Cities Seattle Children’s Ambulatory Clinic is truly fortunate to have Melissa Gardner on our team. Her unwavering dedication, exceptional patient care, and compassionate approach make her a truly deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.
