Melissa recognized the need and desperation of the patient to find help and was determined not to take no for an answer and to advocate for the patient.
Melissa had a young patient who was seeking rehab for substance abuse. The patient had been in the ER for an extended period of time waiting on placement. The Social worker and SUDS coach had attempted several placements but were denied due to various barriers.

The only solution left was to discharge the patient home since they couldn't find placement and had exhausted resources. The patient was tearful and fearful of going home due to known availability of drugs and temptation of use in the home. Melissa stepped in and took it upon herself to call other facilities and explain the patient's needs and request.

After calling several places, she found one that would accept the patient and aid in recovery. The patient was placed and transported to the facility. This was above and beyond the call of duty of the nurse, as we have resources and departments that handle this course of care.

Melissa recognized the need and desperation of the patient to find help and was determined not to take no for an answer and to advocate for the patient. In an ER that sees over 100 patients daily who are critical, it is very honorable that she accomplished this when all other available resources had been exhausted.
