She had gathered sand and seashells for a long-term patient who had shared with her that she "never remembers ever going to the beach."
I am honored to nominate Melanie McCraw for the DAISY Nurse Award. She is a nurse who embodies the essence of extraordinary care, compassion, and dedication in every aspect of her professional life. Melanie's accolades are plentiful, as described: she is a master's-prepared RN, holds ANCC PMH-BC certification, has obtained CNCP level 4, is an effective preceptor and charge nurse, and also volunteers in the communities around us.
A shining example of her nursing commitment was when she returned from vacation. She had gathered sand and seashells for a long-term patient who had shared with her that she "never remembers ever going to the beach." This was a small but significant act of kindness that had a profoundly positive impact on the patient's well-being and mental health. This thoughtful gesture not only brightened the patient's day but also brought her comfort and a sense of connection during a very challenging time.
On another recent occasion, Melanie purchased a small, soft Spiderman for a patient who was struggling with anxiety and separation from her family. Through purposeful conversations with this patient, she was able to identify comfort measures that were highly individualized for her. Beyond the walls, Melanie often volunteers in the community whether it is through health education, outreach programs or lending a helping hand wherever needed, she truly embodies the spirit of service.
Her unwavering commitment to her patients and community is a testament to her extraordinary character and the profound impact she has on those around her. For her compassionate care, selflessness, and dedication to making the world a brighter place, I wholeheartedly nominate Melanie McCraw for the DAISY Nurse Award.
