The world would be a better place with more people like Melanie.
For the past 10 years, the U.S. has had over 225K adults hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia. These are adults aged 50 and up. That's way too many. That's roughly 616 hospitalizations per day. However, a new medication is now available that will hopefully impact that number. It's a vaccine specifically designed for adults who need protection against pneumococcal disease. For several months now, I have made several attempts to meet with the staff at the Abilene VA clinic to inform them of this new assistance in fighting the disease. After several attempts, I finally gained the opportunity to meet with Melanie Machicek, RN, to discuss the need for this medication with the U.S. Veterans' population in mind.
From the very beginning of the meeting, Melanie expressed a deep compassion for this clinic and for all those it serves. "I love this place!" were the very words she shared with me, accompanied by a tremendous smile. In speaking with her about the number of adults hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia, Melanie expressed a sincere and empathetic understanding. She's very genuine. She spoke about the teamwork among the entire clinic staff and took pride in what this particular clinic has been able to do for the vet community. Her enthusiasm for her work, her patients, and this clinic is highly contagious. The world would be a better place with more people like Melanie. I am so fortunate to have met her. I have a good feeling that she and I will be able to collaborate on so much more. All of which will benefit the entire VA population!
Before our meeting concluded, Melanie stated, "I'm here all the time!" At that point, it became apparent to me that she is completely selfless in her dedication and the time she spends working in this clinic, with her staff, and with all the patients they serve. Simply put, she has so much positivity, and I love it! It is contagious! Thank you, Melanie! I know that this clinic and its patients are in great hands with your presence.
