We were performing a vertebral augmentation on a patient for a painful compression fracture in the Cath Lab. The procedure is performed under moderate sedation with the patient in the prone position on the procedure table. This patient began to desaturate during the procedure, secondary to the moderate sedation required to keep the patient comfortable. Melanie was not even scrubbed in on the case but immediately joined the team performing the procedure and guided the patient back to respiratory stability through successful mask ventilation, opioid, reversal, attention to detail, and the most outstanding of nursing care. She was clinically flawless, acting quickly & calmly while leading the team. This was no different from any other instance when Melanie was pulled into a procedure room as the “go to” nurse to help guide a patient through this kind of scenario. As a result of her actions, I was able to stay scrubbed and complete the patient’s procedure successfully while remaining sterile. Thank you, Melanie!
