I have often wondered why Mel’s name hasn’t already been on a DAISY banner, and the only explanation I can find is that she is so often assigned to the sickest patients - the ones who are too critically ill to ever remember the extraordinary nurse caring for them. For her, it has never been about ego or recognition. It has always been about saving lives, advocating fiercely for her patients, teaching and supporting those around her, and working seamlessly as part of a team.

Mel is one of the purest, most beautiful souls I have ever met. Her heart, integrity, and commitment to her patients and peers are exactly why she is the kind of nurse who should receive this award.

Mel is a relentless advocate, unafraid to speak up in situations where others might hesitate. Her ability to think quickly and act decisively makes her invaluable. One coworker recently told me how much he loves working beside her because she is always three steps ahead - helping patients across Maine Medical Center long before their conditions have the chance to worsen.

A few months ago, I was caring for a critically ill patient who suddenly began to decline. I had barely left the room all day. The patient showed clear signs of deterioration, and quickly. Around that time, Mel came to the bedside to check in while rounding in the 1600 role. She stayed by my side, joined by a few other nurses I know I can always depend on when support is needed most.

The patient declined rapidly and coded. Mel never left our side. If you asked anyone in that room, they would tell you she was the one running the code that day. Her leadership allowed the room to function as one cohesive unit, and we achieved ROSC.

When the patient’s family was brought in afterward, the room fell silent as we waited for a provider to explain what had happened. Instead, it was Mel who stepped forward. She clearly and compassionately explained what had occurred, what interventions we had performed, and what the next steps would be. She was steady, articulate, and comforting. The family placed their trust in us that day because of the way Mel communicated with them.

Afterward, Mel helped me transport the patient to CT, coordinating a strategic, efficient plan in the midst of chaos. In the days that followed, she continued to support me as I struggled to process the situation - offering clarity, reassurance, and the kind of understanding that only a seasoned and empathetic ICU nurse can give.

I have told Mel many times that if my own family were hospitalized, I would want her caring for them. I trust her judgment and her intuitive presence in the most difficult situations. She guides her coworkers with a level of insight that makes a lasting impact. I have watched her orient countless new nurses, and the knowledge and skills she has shared with them will continue to benefit our patients for years to come.

For her unwavering dedication, extraordinary skill, advocacy, and her ability to lead with both strength and compassion, Melanie Bureau is truly deserving of this DAISY Award.
