Because of her persistence and clinical judgment, the decision was made to life-flight me to the University of Utah Hospital, where I was diagnosed with preeclampsia with severe features.
I am nominating Megan Guess, RN, because she quite literally saved my life and my baby's through her compassion, attention to detail, and unwavering advocacy. During my pregnancy, I made multiple visits to the OB emergency triage with concerning symptoms; consistently high blood pressure, protein in my urine, and severe swelling in my legs, hands, and face. Each time, I left feeling dismissed and unheard. Despite knowing something was wrong in my body, my concerns were not taken seriously, and I was repeatedly sent home. Out of fear and frustration, I filed a grievance after a negative experience with a nurse. I did not expect anything beyond a routine response, but Megan Guess, RN, the director herself, personally reached out to me. She took the time to truly listen to my story. She offered a sincere apology, not just for the specific incident, but for my overall experience.

What sets Megan apart is what she did next. While reviewing my chart as part of the grievance process, she noticed critical lab results and patterns that had been overlooked. Instead of ignoring them, she acted immediately. She contacted me and urged me to return right away. Megan didn’t stop there; she advocated for me when others had previously dismissed my concerns. She stood up to the doctors and pushed for my condition to be taken seriously. Because of her persistence and clinical judgment, the decision was made to life-flight me to the University of Utah Hospital, where I was diagnosed with preeclampsia with severe features. I delivered my premature baby shortly after. It is not an exaggeration to say that without Megan’s intervention, my outcome and my baby’s could have been very different. She saw what others missed. She listened when others didn’t, and she acted when it mattered most. Megan exemplifies what it means to be a nurse. She combined clinical excellence with genuine compassion and the courage to advocate for a patient, even when it meant challenging others. In one of the most vulnerable and frightening moments of my life, she became my voice when I felt unheard. Because of Megan Guess, I am here today. Because of her, my baby is here. She is more than deserving of the DAISY Award.
