What truly sets Megan apart is her unwavering commitment to empowering staff.
Megan Doerr exemplifies the YOU MATTER practice model, guiding her team with compassion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to patients, staff, and the future of nursing. Her impact is evident not only in measurable outcomes but is felt every day by the teams she supports and the patients we serve.
Leading with integrity and authenticity, Megan sets a standard of professionalism that inspires trust and excellence. Her focus on access, safety, and continuity of care has been instrumental in expanding the hospital Transfer Center, now serving 50% of WVUM’s health system.
Over the past year, she played a key role in developing the MRI Round-Trip Transfer process, which has significantly improved timely, coordinated access to urgently needed testing. This initiative strengthened capacity management, ensuring patients receive the right care at the right time and preventing unnecessary patient transfers to WVUH inpatient beds.
Under Megan’s leadership, the Departure Lounge was established and continues to expand, improving hospital throughput and facilitating smoother patient transitions. Collectively, these innovations have enhanced patient flow, reduced delays, and fostered system-wide collaboration—directly advancing quality, efficiency, and patient safety.
What truly sets Megan apart is her unwavering commitment to empowering staff. She recognizes that when caregivers feel supported and valued, exceptional care naturally follows.
Over the past three years, the department has grown to 211 employees, including the hiring of 5 UCs, 83 CAs, and 34 nurses, as well as facilitating the internal transfer of 78 nurses. This strategic growth reduced bed closures by 69% from the previous year and decreased Emergency Department and PACU boarding times.
By strengthening staffing and elevating standards of care, this nurse leader has fostered a culture of excellence, as evidenced by multiple DAISY Award nominations, a BEE Award, and the department’s first-ever EXB Department of the Month.
Megan is deeply committed to developing the next generation of nurses. She actively engages with local Schools of Nursing, meeting with students and offering casual CA positions that allow them to rotate throughout the facility and explore multiple specialties to discover the nursing path that best fits their interests and strengths. This initiative has been pivotal in recruiting and retaining Graduate Nurses at WVUH.
This forward-thinking approach strengthens retention, builds confidence, and supports the development of a sustainable nursing workforce. The nominee consistently promotes professional growth and fosters a culture rooted in respect, collaboration, and accountability.
Beyond operational achievements, she embodies compassion in action. Megan leads with transparency, consistency, and accountability, fostering stability and trust during times of growth and change.
