Meegan was able to complete the medication pass and participate in the administration of blood products while maintaining focus on the patient's emotional and psychosocial needs.
So many students enter clinical focusing on tasks or skills they want to practice. This student demonstrated great empathy, respect, and professionalism during a clinical shift on the Medical-Surgical acute care floor. A patient with known chronic disease was admitted with shortness of breath, and it was assumed that she had a lung infection or exacerbation of her chronic disease. Testing diagnosed her with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of 2 months. The patient also needed a blood transfusion for critically low platelets and bleeding. When Meegan and I went into the room to pass the medications and administer the blood product transfusion, the patient was crying and in need of comfort. Meegan immediately shifted gears from being task-oriented to sitting with the patient and providing comfort during her time of distress. The patient calmed and conversed with the student, visibly relaxing and connecting in a therapeutic way. Meegan was able to complete the medication pass and participate in the administration of blood products while maintaining focus on the patient's emotional and psychosocial needs. Afterward, the patient and the primary RN told me how impressed they were with Meegan and her communication skills. These are the moments that define nursing as both an art and a profession.
