July 2026 Honoree
Medical Surgical
We had a young homeless woman brought into the ER who was suffering from an injury to her wrist. She was confused and uncooperative; she had been severely abused and neglected (probably a victim of human trafficking). Her injury was caused by a piece of metal wire twisted around her wrist to restrain her. The patient did communicate that she had not bathed in a very long time.
Needless to say, this would be a challenging patient to take care of. I had her assigned to 5 North. The nurses who received her were Kaitley Good and Maria Alvarado.
To say that these nurses went above and beyond to help this lady would be an understatement. They showered her, dressed her wounds, cut her matted hair, and gave her back some dignity. They even bought (with their own money) underwear and personal hygiene items for the patient’s use and had them DoorDashed to the hospital in the middle of the night.
This is one of the most impressive acts of human kindness that I have seen in a long while and I didn’t want it to go unnoticed.
Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
