The fact that the patient wanted to share this very important moment in her life with Medes first, out of everyone else, to me speaks a lot, and that would be the nurse that I would want for myself if I were ever going to be on the other side of the nurse-patient relationship
Medes's patient called, and I happened to answer the call in the room. The patient very emotionally stated: "I have some very good news, and the first person I want to share it with is my nurse, Medes." I was touched by what she said, thinking she could have called a family member, or she could have waited until Medes would go into her room and then discuss the good results that she had received from her test.
I made Medes aware that the patient asked for her. Then I saw both the patient and Medes walking together in the hallway, being supportive and both happy. This example shows me that this nurse, on top of the professional work and excellent nursing skills that she has acquired, is also building a very trusting, supportive, caring relationship with her patients, a necessary quality for bedside nurses.
