Acting on both her clinical insight and cultural awareness, she helped bridge a critical gap in understanding.
This nurse was recognized by an attending physician in the pediatric emergency department for her exceptional initiative, teamwork, and patient advocacy—despite not being the assigned primary nurse.
After the physician conducted an initial assessment with the patient and family using a video interpreter (in-person interpreter was not available), she observed this nurse enter the room to introduce herself, stating that she recognized the family from previous visits. As a fluent Spanish speaker, the nurse was uniquely positioned to connect more directly and meaningfully with the family during a moment of vulnerability.
Shortly afterward, the nurse approached the physician to share concerns that had not been fully communicated through video interpretation. Acting on both her clinical insight and cultural awareness, she helped bridge a critical gap in understanding. Together, they returned to the bedside and learned that the family had recently experienced the loss of another child. This event contributed to significant fear and anxiety during the current visit.
Through collaboration, clear communication, and compassionate care, the nurse and physician developed a plan that addressed both the family's medical and emotional needs. They provided thorough education and reassurance, ensuring the parents felt heard, supported, and more at ease at the time of discharge.
In her nomination, the physician emphasized that this nurse truly went above and beyond—especially in stepping in to support a patient who was not assigned to her. She highlighted how this act reflects the very best of pediatric care, where teamwork, empathy, and advocacy are essential. The physician expressed deep gratitude for the strong sense of community and collaboration demonstrated, noting that this moment is a powerful example of what the DAISY Award represents.
Medelyn, we are grateful for your ability to connect with patients in a dynamic and diverse department. Your time, attention, compassion, and willingness to help shine through each day in the PedsED.
