She was there for us on our worst day and then was also there on the best day of our lives, when we got to meet our baby girl for the first time.
My husband and I have had Maya as a nurse twice while on this unit, and both times her compassion and empathy made our experience so much better. We are truly so blessed that our paths crossed, and we will never forget everything she did for us. It takes a special person to do what she does, she found her true calling on the mother baby unit.

The first time we were lucky enough to have Maya as a nurse was a couple of years ago when we lost our son, who was born at 22 weeks. This was the worst week of our lives, but having Maya by our sides made it all just a little easier. Maya was our nurse the day prior to when our son was born, but she volunteered to come in on her day off and was the one who took him when it was time for us to say goodbye.

The absolute worst moment of my life was made better by knowing he was in the hands of someone so caring and trustworthy. Relief would not be a word that I thought I would use to describe that moment, but she made that possible. At this time, she was a travel nurse, so we figured we’d never see her again.

When we went to the hospital to deliver our baby girl, we had told our nurse the experience we had when we lost our son, and Maya’s name came up because of how much of an impact she had made on us. What we didn’t expect was for her to still be working at UVMMC since she was a travel nurse, but we especially didn’t expect her to be working on the day that I spontaneously went into labor with our baby girl, but she was.

It had to be fate, even though that seems so cheesy to say. I am still slightly in shock that she was there; it seemed so surreal. She was there for us on our worst day and then was also there on the best day of our lives, when we got to meet our baby girl for the first time.

A lot of tears were shed, but the reunion was something that made my delivery even more special. I will never forget Maya and the impact she has had on my family. She deserves so much more than just this award, and I hope she knows how truly grateful we are.

You truly are one of a kind and thank you just is not enough to show how much appreciation we have for you.
