At the center of every wheel is a hub, which is responsible for the individual spokes fluidly and congruently working together to achieve forward momentum. I can't think of a better way to describe what a charge nurse's role should demonstrate than such an analogy. I can't think of a better analogy to describe the effectiveness that is found in Matthew Mullin as charge nurse for 2 West. In my time there as both travel and staff nurse, I witnessed a multitude of successful patient outcomes due to Matt's providing the primary nurse with full emotional and physical support in times of need. True, bedside nursing is often chaotic, and the days are long, but there is much value in working alongside a set of hands and ears that eagerly search you out to offer assistance in times when you feel as though you don't have a moment to even ask for it yourself. The persistent graciousness, patience, neutrality, and calm leadership found in Matt not only encourages fellow staff but ultimately positively affects and supports patient goals on the unit, and at the end of the day, that is a measure by which we can gauge an effective teammate. I have spent a few years working in various hospitals as a nurse and nearly three decades in facilities as a patient. Rarely have I encountered a professional so focused on therapeutic effectiveness the way I have noted in Matt. When I returned to a career I love following my own serious surgery, I knew that the long days ahead were covered in confidence just by Matt being present on shifts, and for that, I would like to thank him. I have yet to find a soul at Augusta Health that feels Matt would be undeserving of such an accolade as this award, for he is well known to be man truly appreciated by all. Thank you, Matt for helping each of us take better care of our precious patients as we aim to serve out the true purpose of Augusta Health's vision!
