May 2026 Honoree
Matthew Kay
Matthew Kay's clinical instructor wrote the following:
I had the privilege of working with Matthew Kay as his clinical instructor during three clinical rotations. Throughout this time, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional compassion, professionalism, and a genuine dedication to patient care that truly sets him apart.
Matthew goes above and beyond not only for his patients, but also for staff and fellow students. He is always willing to lend a helping hand, share his experiences, and contribute to a positive and supportive clinical environment. His presence elevates the entire team.
One moment that truly reflects Matthew’s character occurred during the transfer of a critically ill patient to the ICU. Without hesitation, he stepped in to assist, remaining calm, focused, and attentive in a high-pressure situation. The nurses involved specifically commented on his initiative, teamwork, and willingness to be fully present when it mattered most. His actions were not only clinically appropriate, but deeply reassuring to those around him.
What makes Matthew especially remarkable is his calm and compassionate demeanor, particularly when caring for anxious patients. He has a natural ability to connect, comfort, and instill a sense of trust, reminding patients that they are not alone during vulnerable moments.
Clinically, Matthew is exceptional. He demonstrates strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing safe, high-quality care. More importantly, he leads with heart—something that cannot be taught, but is essential to truly great nursing.
As Matthew prepares to graduate this May, I feel both proud and inspired to have been part of his journey. He embodies everything that nursing should be. I have no doubt that he will not only make Rutgers University proud, but will also touch countless lives with his compassion, skill, and unwavering dedication.
It would be an honor to work alongside Matthew in the future.
