July 2024 Honoree
Matthew C. Harville, RN
I was a patient on the unit due to having knee surgery. I have a severe needle phobia and was not aware that the lab comes in every morning to draw blood. This was my first hospital stay. I often have a hard time because people don’t understand how fearful I am of needles; it’s extreme. I complied with all of the meds, procedures, blood draws, etc. I realized I developed insecurity and panic feelings each time someone came into my room because I thought they were going to do something that involved a needle. I actually had a few panic attacks (never happened before). Matt worked on my second night there in the hospital. He took his time explaining everything to me, and when I shared my fears with him, he didn’t laugh at me or make me feel stupid for my fears. He assured me I was safe and gave me choices in my care. He even offered to stay with me when it was time for my blood draw. This may seem small to some but for me, Matt gave me my power back in a situation I felt powerless in. Thank you, Matt.
Thank you, Matthew C., for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
