October 2026 Honoree
Matt Murphy, RN
I would like to commend Matt Murphy for the exceptional care, compassion, and advocacy he provided during one of the most difficult periods of my life. Following a laminectomy, I experienced multiple complications that required additional surgeries, including treatment for a CSF leak, and an extended hospital stay. Throughout this challenging time, Matt consistently went above and beyond to make sure I was as comfortable, safe, and supported as possible. He treated me with kindness and respect, even when I was in severe pain, frustrated, scared, or exhausted.
As a night nurse, Matt was often there during the hardest hours, when pain, anxiety, and uncertainty felt the most overwhelming. His calm presence and professionalism helped me get through many difficult nights. He never made me feel like a burden and always took my concerns seriously.
What stood out most was his willingness to advocate for me. One night, when I was experiencing severe pain around midnight, Matt worked diligently with the medical team to ensure I received the medications and care I needed. He did not simply accept the situation—he pushed for answers and advocated on my behalf. Knowing that someone was fighting for me when I was unable to fight for myself meant more than I can adequately express.
Matt also maintained excellent communication with my charge nurse and the rest of the care team, helping ensure I received the best possible care. He helped navigate stressful situations through patience, understanding, and clear communication. When I was overwhelmed, he took the time to listen and helped keep everyone focused on my care and well-being.
One of the things that meant the most to me was that Matt took the time to connect with me as a person, not just as a patient. We both happen to be wrestling fans, and during some very difficult nights he would talk with me about wrestling and other everyday things. Those conversations may seem small, but they helped calm me down, take my mind off the pain, and feel less alone during a long hospital stay. I don't have many friends, and Matt's willingness to spend a few minutes talking and listening made a real difference in my emotional well-being.
Matt also showed kindness in ways that went beyond his normal duties. On one occasion, I had missed dinner, and he made sure I was able to get something to eat. It may seem like a small gesture, but when you're stuck in a hospital, recovering from multiple surgeries and feeling miserable, those acts of kindness mean a great deal. It showed that he genuinely cared about me as a person and not just as another patient on his assignment.
Most importantly, Matt showed genuine compassion. He listened when I needed someone to hear me, treated me with dignity during some of my lowest moments, and consistently demonstrated empathy, professionalism, and respect. His dedication, advocacy, and kindness had a profound impact on my hospital experience and recovery.
For these reasons, I believe Matt exemplifies everything the DAISY Award represents. His commitment to patient care, especially during the long and difficult night shifts, makes him highly deserving of this recognition. I will always be grateful for the difference he made during one of the toughest times in my life!
