When he encouraged us to speak to Dad, assuring us he could still hear us even while sedated, it was clear that Mason understood the importance of these moments.
The last four days of my father’s life were spent on Mary Brigh 6G. My mother and I stayed at his bedside as much as possible. While all of his nurses were exceptional, one in particular, Mason, stood out in an extraordinary way. Mason was Dad’s dayshift nurse for two of those days, and his compassionate, expert care left an indelible mark on us. My mom felt so strongly about Mason’s dedication that she insisted on nominating him for the DAISY Award, citing his skillful care and the obvious empathy he had for my father. Mason was thorough and attentive, managing my father’s blood sugar, keeping his mouth moist while on the ventilator, and repositioning him every two hours to prevent sores. He took every detail seriously, from keeping Dad’s feet in boots for protection to carefully monitoring his heart and respiratory rates. Beyond his clinical precision, Mason took the time to answer our questions, guiding us through the monitors and explaining what we were seeing in a clear and reassuring manner. He was honest and sincere, even when the news was difficult to hear. When he encouraged us to speak to Dad, assuring us he could still hear us even while sedated, it was clear that Mason understood the importance of these moments. He went the extra mile, even combing Dad’s hair and shaving him after asking Mom how he typically wore his facial hair.

At the end of his shift, knowing Dad likely wouldn’t make it through the night, Mason hugged me, sharing our sorrow with genuine kindness. But beyond this attentive and compassionate care for Dad, I noticed something else. Mason cared about my mom and recognized that she, too, needed his support. He asked her about Dad’s life, his time in the Army, his love of woodworking, his dogs, and his character. He inquired about their life together, their farm, and the places they had traveled. In these conversations, Mason reminded her of the rich life Dad had lived. When he asked what Dad generally looked like, it led her to show photos on her phone, where she shared glimpses of their life together, their home, and Dad’s beloved dog. Mason didn’t just listen; he truly engaged, giving my mom a way to reflect and process, gently guiding her toward celebrating Dad’s life, even in the midst of such sadness. Mason was not only a credit to the nursing profession and to Mayo Clinic, but he also embodied the very heart of nursing. Through his genuine kindness, compassion, and commitment, he brought comfort and peace to both my father and our family at a time when we needed it most.
