MaryKate’s actions exemplify what it means to advocate for patients with dignity, kindness, and grace.
MaryKate received a patient transferred as a rapid response from Med/Surg to the Progressive Care Unit after a five-day admission. Upon arrival, the patient was unresponsive and required immediate respiratory intervention. Although the patient arrived as a full code, MaryKate carefully reviewed the patient’s records and identified an existing POLST (Physician (or Provider) Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) indicating the patient’s wishes were DNR/DNI.

Recognizing the importance of honoring the patient’s stated preferences, MaryKate promptly contacted the patient’s designated power of attorney to confirm the POLST. The code status was updated accordingly, and a discussion took place with the care team and the patient’s representative. As the patient was unable to speak for herself, the decision was made to transition to comfort-focused care.

The patient passed the following day peacefully. MaryKate remained at the bedside, holding the patient’s hand and praying with her in her final moments. She later notified the patient's representative, who expressed deep gratitude for MaryKate’s compassion, advocacy, and presence. MaryKate also took the extra step of writing a condolence card to the patient’s friends and family after her passing.

MaryKate’s actions exemplify what it means to advocate for patients with dignity, kindness, and grace. Her attentiveness ensured the patient’s wishes were honored, and her compassion provided comfort to both the patient and her loved ones during an incredibly difficult time.
