An ICU patient declined rapidly and required the administration of emergent blood. The emergency room was extremely busy throughout the day. I called Mary and asked if the Belmont Rapid Infuser could be brought to the ICU. After it arrived, the primary nurse said she needed help with the Belmont. I again reached out to Mary to see if she could assist. Mary responded quickly and helped the primary nurse administer the 4 units of ordered blood. The patient's condition improved immediately after the transfusion, and Mary's involvement directly contributed to the patient's improved status. I'm thankful for her willingness to help in stressful situations, inside and outside of her own department. I'm so thankful for her experience and skill, and for her availability to help all our patients whenever the need arises. In this situation, I'm certain Mary's actions directly impacted the patient's survival.
