My father was admitted to the hospital for pancreatitis and was admitted to the ICU the next day. Mary Kate was one of the nurses that has taken care of my father. Due to complications of the pancreatitis, (sepsis, reduced renal function, gallstones, electrolyte issues, etc.) my father had to be restrained, sedated, and intubated. This required a lot of additional work for the staff. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of care that my dad has received from all the doctors, respiratory therapists, nurses, aides, and others. BUT Mary Kate consistently went the extra mile more than all the other personnel. She advocated for the best treatment options, constantly checked on him and rotated him every two hours. She was the only nurse who consistently did oral care, emptied his Foley catheter bag, did bed baths, etc., without having to be told or asked! She cared for my father and my family with compassion and understanding. She was patient and kind answering all of our questions, giving us constant feedback regarding his lab results, procedure results. We were kept well informed by Mary Kate which helped us (the family) to make informed decisions. Her experience and professionalism should be recognized and rewarded! She is a GEM for the hospital and the ICU!
