Mary Claire has an incredible ability to make her patients feel seen, valued, and cherished, no matter their background and circumstances.
I am deeply moved to nominate Mary Claire, an allergy nurse at the Los Gatos Clinic, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary compassion and heartfelt dedication.

Mary Claire was entrusted with the care of a precious 6-year-old patient who is completely blind due to a condition present at birth. This young patient, coming from a low-income household, faces unimaginable challenges every day. During a lengthy four-hour allergy procedure, Mary Claire's nurturing and empathetic nature truly shone. She took this time to connect with the child, easing his anxiety with gentle play and loving attention.

Upon discovering that his toys were outdated, inappropriate for his age, and mostly acquired from physician visits, Mary Claire's heart went out to him. She learned he would be returning in two weeks for a follow-up appointment. Determined to make a difference, Mary Claire orchestrated the purchase of a Toniebox set, a screen-free audio player that would delight and engage his sense of touch and hearing. It was a thoughtful gift, perfect for a child who navigates the world without sight.

But Mary Claire's compassion didn't stop there. She reached out to the Tonie company and secured a huge donation, not just for this little boy also but for his twin sister, who also happens to be blind. She also coordinated approval for the whole process from LPCH community fund raising/donation committee. With the additional funds collected, she bought a gift card for clothes and necessities for the twins, ensuring they felt loved and cared for in ways beyond their medical needs.

Arguably the most impactful action she took was when Mary Claire coordinated for the child and his twin sister to transfer from his current public school to the California School for the Blind in Fremont. The child started in October, and the family is truly grateful to have their son and daughter in a school that can fully support their disability.

Witnessing Mary Claire in action was profoundly moving. On the day the patient and sibling came back with the family for a follow-up, they were also presented with the gifts. Seeing the child’s face light up with joy and the mother’s tears of gratitude brought overwhelming emotions to the surface. Mary Claire has an incredible ability to make her patients feel seen, valued, and cherished, no matter their background and circumstances.

Mary Claire’s selfless actions are a poignant reminder of the incredible impact one nurse can have. Her dedication, kindness, and genuine love for her patients exemplify the very essence of nursing. I am both humbled and honored to wholeheartedly nominate Mary Claire for the DAISY Award. She embodies what it means to care deeply, above and beyond, and her daily acts of kindness are touches of magic that leave lasting imprints on the hearts of those she serves.
