She brought humor and a little light to a dark situation.
Martha recently cared for a patient here in MICU with a poor prognosis. Martha cared for him with a positive attitude, but also stayed realistic. The family specifically said they were so thankful for the energy Martha brought into the room. She allowed the room to be filled with family members to the point that she could barely reach the patient. She never showed frustration or annoyance about this. She talked to the patient as if he could hear her. She gave him that classic "Mama Martha" care that we all know and appreciate. She would turn and clean the patient and apologize for bothering him as his ventilator alarmed. She said, "I wouldn't be a good nurse if I didn't bother you a little bit". She addressed blaring alarms with calm explanations for the family. She explained things to them in simpler terms when the medical information became too much. She brought humor and a little light to a dark situation. She learned about the patient and his family. She was essentially in the room constantly. If I wanted to talk to Martha, I'd have to drag her out of that room. I got my updates from her while she stayed at the bedside. Martha told the family, "I wish so badly I could give you the miracle you are praying for". She impressed me beyond words and provided nursing care that a lot of us could not emotionally handle.
