Martha was caring for a patient with a significant psychiatric history. The patient was heard yelling and cursing multiple times. Each time, Martha took the time to sit with the patient and listen to her. She sat with her, let her talk, and voice her frustrations. Martha would interject when the patient got loud, asking her to please quiet her voice. Even when the patient escalated, requiring a Code Violet to be called, due to the patient screaming and cussing in the hallway, Martha was able to calm the patient down and tell her that together they could talk in the patient's room. Because of the calm but firm demeanor Martha was able to maintain, the patient did go back to her room, where Martha was able to independently speak with the patient and diffuse the situation, without security even having to enter the room. Seeing everyone and hearing the commotion in the hallway, Martha even stepped out of the room to ask everyone to be quiet and move away from the door, as the extra noise was very overstimulating for the patient. Despite the situation, Martha was able to advocate for her patient, diffuse the situation, and maintain the safety of herself and the patient.
