Her selflessness and commitment to the well-being of another human being are a testament to her character and the extraordinary caliber of nurses we are fortunate to have in our ICU.
Markie's actions on an evening in October transcended the duties of her role as an ICU nurse and exemplified the true spirit of compassionate and courageous healthcare.

Markie, like so many of us, was simply on her way to work, preparing for another demanding shift in our trauma ICU. However, her commute took an unforeseen and critical turn when she encountered a car accident. The scene was chaotic and deeply concerning.  A vehicle, clearly involved in a severe collision, began showing signs of smoke, indicating a potential fire. In the moments before emergency services arrived, the situation was rapidly escalating, and it was evident that immediate intervention was desperately needed.

Without a second thought for her own safety and demonstrating incredible bravery, Markie sprang into action. She observed an elderly gentleman trapped inside the smoldering vehicle, clearly disoriented and in distress. Drawing upon her extensive nursing expertise and instincts, she assessed the immediate danger and knew she couldn't wait. With the crucial assistance of a fellow coworker, Markie worked with remarkable strength and determination to extricate the gentleman from the increasingly perilous car. Their swift and decisive actions undoubtedly prevented a far more tragic outcome as flames began to visibly flicker.

But Markie's heroism didn't end there. Her commitment to this patient's well-being extended far beyond the roadside. Once emergency responders arrived and transported the gentleman to our very own Emergency Department, Markie, despite having witnessed a harrowing incident and undoubtedly experiencing her own adrenaline surge, chose to remain by his side. She stayed with him, providing comfort, reassurance, and critical information to the ED staff as they assessed his injuries. She acted as his advocate and a familiar, calming presence during a terrifying and confusing time. Her presence provided a seamless transition of care and demonstrated dedication to her patient, even before he formally became "her" patient within the hospital walls.

Markie's actions on that day were not part of her job description. She showcased exceptional critical thinking, decisive action under pressure, and profound empathy. Her selflessness and commitment to the well-being of another human being are a testament to her character and the extraordinary caliber of nurses we are fortunate to have in our ICU.

Markie is an inspiration to us all. She is a shining example of what it means to be a nurse, a hero, and a compassionate human being.
