Marissa does more than provide nursing care; she provides extraordinary, transformative healing. She is the living definition of the DAISY Award, and I am forever thankful for her dedication to her patients.
Marissa was recently the circulating nurse during my C-section, but my experience with her extraordinary care began nearly a decade ago. I first met Marissa in 2016 during a high-risk surgery at 29 weeks pregnant. I was terrified, but Marissa didn't just monitor my baby; she connected with me on a human level. She spoke to me with the warmth of a lifelong friend, instantly replacing my fear with a sense of profound safety. Her commitment to holistic care was evident from the start.
When I woke from that first surgery, she was there not just to monitor my baby but to advocate fiercely for my comfort, ensuring my nausea was managed and my anxieties were eased. She even went beyond her assigned duties to check on me the following day and visited me in the antepartum unit. This wasn't just doing her job - it was the embodiment of compassionate nursing.
As fate would have it, Marissa became a recurring guardian throughout my motherhood journey. During my second high-risk pregnancy, seeing her familiar face in the OR provided a sense of peace that no medication could replicate. She has a unique gift for clinical excellence paired with deep empathy, making me feel empowered during moments when I felt most vulnerable.
Most recently, I arrived for my fourth C-section. This pregnancy had been defined by constant fear and high-risk complications. I walked into Labor & Delivery feeling overwhelmed, but the moment I saw Marissa, a wave of relief washed over me. Though she was the break nurse that day, she demonstrated heartfelt dedication by rearranging her entire schedule to ensure she could be by my side in the OR.
During this delivery, Marissa went above and beyond to honor my experience as a mother:
Advocacy: She advocated for me to have precious skin-to-skin time with my daughter before she was taken to the NICU, ensuring our bond was prioritized despite the clinical chaos.
Compassion: Recognizing my sadness at having no photos from my previous three C-sections, she took it upon herself to capture beautiful photos of my daughter’s birth—a treasure I will hold forever.
Emotional Support: She talked me through my deepest fears, transforming a sterile surgical environment into a space of strength and empowerment.
Having Marissa by my side during the most terrifying and beautiful moments of my life has been a gift. Her presence created a full-circle moment that I will never forget. As a fellow SMCH RN, I recognize that Marissa does more than provide nursing care; she provides extraordinary, transformative healing. She is the living definition of the DAISY Award, and I am forever thankful for her dedication to her patients.
