Demonstrations of compassion and empathy are what makes a wonderful healthcare worker.
I was admitted into the hospital after my second miscarriage. I was on a work trip with my fiancé, we live in Arizona. My entire family was far away. I was at the hospital alone at this time because my fiancé had to work. I wasn’t eating much; Marissa came into my room to take my vitals and administer meds. She was the ONLY one of my nurses, and at this point I had been through I believe 4 shift changes, to speak to me about anything other than my physical health. She was so compassionate about what I was going through, she talked to me about her sister and other things. Marissa then offered to buy me a bagel from the bagel store on a different floor. I let her know I didn’t have my wallet with me. She brought it to me anyway. It was such a small act of kindness, but it meant absolutely everything to me in those moments. Demonstrations of compassion and empathy are what makes a wonderful healthcare worker. At the end of the day, we are all people with lives, feelings, patients and nurses alike. I didn’t get to tell her I was grateful for her company, but I sure am.
