I was on day one of the post-cesarean section. I was at the NICU waiting for my son to come back from his surgery. Unfortunately, his surgery had to be prolonged due to new findings, and this made me wait for my baby longer than expected, so I missed my pain pills. I was in pain but strong because my baby could arrive from the OR at any minute. Pain started to make me feel miserable, and suddenly, I saw my nurse, Maricar Vargas, in the NICU. She came to me and told me that she had my pain meds and was concerned about me skipping them. She had gone above and beyond to look for me, as she knew I had missed my pain meds. She brought me water, and I felt cared for. I felt that my well-being was important to her. I also learned not to skip pain meds as the pain can certainly debilitate me. So she made sure I understood that. Overall, she was an amazing nurse during the two days she had me. She paid attention to my concern about my swollen nipple and brought me a comfort gel. My concerns were validated. She also made sure I knew that if my husband was unavailable to take me to the NICU, she could take me there. She made me aware that I could also pump in the NICU, something I didn't know I could. So she made my life easier. Maricar is a nurse by heart. She truly cares and goes above and beyond to make patients feel validated and cared for.
