My 78-year-old father had been through 2 aortic surgeries and a code, and this new life that was to come was extremely scary. The nurse Maria and I noticed my father was experiencing symptoms even though the doctors wanted to discharge him. This nurse and the covering manager went above and beyond to advocate for him to stay in the hospital for at least the weekend. The following day, this amazing nurse noticed my father had gone into a heart arrhythmia and had a significant hemoglobin drop, and she went into action! She and her colleagues got my father the appropriate testing as fast as possible. Maria was so passionate about her work that she and her coworker cried with me in empathy because this event could have happened to him elsewhere if he had been discharged. Once they brought my father to the ICU, Maria even came to say bye to us after her shift to make sure my father was ok.
