Recently, she cared for a patient who presented to the ER with flank pain, who was ultimately diagnosed with a non-STEMI. After cardiology was notified and a heparin drip order was placed, Maria noticed the patient had begun complaining of an intermittent headache.

Demonstrating exceptional critical thinking, she immediately approached the physician and advocated for a head CT before she would start the drip. Her proactive decision proved lifesaving. The radiologist called with results showing a brain infarct/bleed. By speaking up and prioritizing patient safety, Maria prevented likely serious harm to the patient.
