August 2026 Honoree
Maria Lockwood, RN
As I approach my daughter's first birthday, I find myself reflecting on my entire birthing journey and the incredible people who helped me through one of the most difficult experiences of my life. There is one person in particular whose compassion, advocacy, and dedication made an immeasurable difference: Maria Lockwood.
At exactly 27 weeks gestation, I was suddenly faced with the terrifying reality of being 6 centimeters dilated. What should have been a joyful time became one of the most traumatic experiences I have ever endured. During that frightening and uncertain period, Maria became my constant source of support, strength, and reassurance.
From the moment she cared for me, Maria advocated fiercely on behalf of both my daughter and me. She made sure that no procedure, intervention, or decision was made without my full understanding. She took the time to explain what was happening, answer my questions, and ensure that I felt informed and empowered during a time when so much felt out of my control.
Maria’s care extended far beyond medical treatment. While I was bedridden, she recognized the importance of preserving my dignity and humanity. Something as simple as helping me brush my teeth made me feel like a person again rather than just a patient. She even expertly changed my bed sheets, pillows, and blankets while I was lying there going through contractions. These small acts of kindness meant more than words can express.
What touched me most was her commitment to providing consistency and comfort. Maria even adjusted her shifts so she could continue caring for me, ensuring I had a familiar face beside me during such an overwhelming time. Knowing she would be there brought me a sense of peace and security that cannot be measured.
When it came time for my daughter's delivery, Maria remained by my side every step of the way. She cheered me on, reminded me of my strength, and told me how lucky my little girl was going to be to have me as her mother. In moments when I doubted myself, she gave me confidence. In moments when I was afraid, she gave me courage.
While I was fortunate to have tremendous support from my husband and family, Maria cared for all of us. She not only looked after me and my husband but also helped reassure my family throughout the process, answering questions and providing comfort and playfulness during an incredibly stressful time.
As I celebrate my daughter's first birthday, I have re-recognized just how much Maria's presence impacted our story. She transformed a traumatic experience into one where I felt seen, heard, respected, and cared for. Her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering dedication embody everything the DAISY Award represents.
I will never forget the difference Maria made in my life and in my daughter's life before she even entered the world. She is truly deserving of this recognition.
With deepest gratitude.
