Her warmth and kindness genuinely got me through one of the hardest days of my life.
I found myself in A&E in excruciating pain. What began as a terrifying experience quickly became very serious and resulted in emergency surgery. Unfortunately, my overall experience in the hospital was not a positive one, but there was one nurse whose care stood out above everything else. That nurse was Maria.

Maria immediately recognised the seriousness of my condition and how much pain I was truly in, long before anyone else did. She advocated for me when others underestimated my situation, informing the doctor of her concerns, insisting that further investigation was needed, and ensuring my MRI was carried out promptly. She provided me with medication, fluids, food, and tea, but most importantly, she gave me comfort. Maria held my hand, hugged me, and reassured me that everything would be okay. She shared personal experiences to help me feel less alone, asked about my husband, children, and life, and kept me distracted from the pain. Her warmth and kindness genuinely got me through one of the hardest days of my life.

“When it became clear that I couldn’t receive the necessary surgery at Bedford, Maria explained everything that would happen next with incredible care and clarity. She made sure both my family and I felt supported and informed before I was blue-lighted to Addenbrooke’s. Before I left, she asked my husband to come back and update her, asked the paramedics to take good care of me, and stayed by my side until I was safely in the ambulance.

I truly believe that without Maria’s quick thinking and determination, my scans, blood tests, fluids, and medication would not have been arranged so promptly, and that could have delayed my surgery, potentially leaving me permanently paralysed in my right leg. Maria is, quite simply, an angel in disguise. She represents everything that is good about nursing: compassion, advocacy, and genuine humanity. The hospital is incredibly lucky to have her, and I will forever be grateful for the care she gave me.
