She popped in to check on him often, rearranging pillows, bringing water, patiently listening even when we couldn’t understand what Dad was saying, and always asking if there was anything she could do for us.
My dad went to the ER with Covid pneumonia in February 2025. He moved from the ER to the ICU and then finally to floor 6 of Emerson Hospital. Margalie made my dad and all of us feel welcomed and comfortable. After a day or two, the room felt like a second home to us. Margalie showed us the ropes of how to adjust the bed, how to work the call button, and how to adjust the oxygen mask to take a little pressure off Dad’s sore nose. One day, I had forgotten to call for Dad’s lunch from his room phone, and I didn’t want to go into Dad’s room and wake him from a nap, so Margalie handed her phone to me in the hallway. While Margalie was on a break for a few days, my dad had a stroke. I felt a sense of relief when she came back on duty because she had known my dad before and after his stroke. She popped in to check on him often, rearranging pillows, bringing water, patiently listening even when we couldn’t understand what Dad was saying, and always asking if there was anything she could do for us. Each time she came into the room, Covid protocol meant that she had to put on gown, gloves, mask, and goggles, but that didn’t stop her from checking in often. She also peeked in the window of Dad’s room, and if he was sleeping, she would not come in unless she had to. She put a sticky note on the door reminding others that he needed rest. I will always remember her good care, and I hope that her patients are as good to her as she has always been to us. Thanks, Margalie!
