Manny’s actions on a day that could have ended in tragedy demonstrate the very essence of what it means to be a nurse, alert, caring, and ready to protect and save lives in any situation.
Manny received the DAISY Award for his extraordinary heroism, quick thinking, and unwavering commitment to patient safety. Manny’s actions on a day that could have ended in tragedy demonstrate the very essence of what it means to be a nurse, alert, caring, and ready to protect and save lives in any situation.
On the day of this incident, Manny was working in the emergency room when he noticed a patient awaiting a procedure. The patient, who was connected to an oxygen cannula, began to smoke a cigarette while on the gurney. Without hesitation, Manny recognized the immediate and catastrophic danger the situation posed, not only to the patient but to everyone in the vicinity.
Without a moment’s thought for his own safety, Manny sprang into action. He quickly and decisively moved to stop the patient and extinguish the fire, preventing what could have been a devastating situation. His calmness under pressure and quick response undoubtedly saved the patient’s life and protected the entire hospital from potential harm. Manny acted with the professionalism, skill, and bravery that all health care workers aspire to demonstrate during moments of crisis.
This incident was brought to our attention by Lolla, our Vice President of Nursing, who immediately saw Manny's actions as the definition of excellence in nursing. Her words, when recounting the event, spoke volumes about the impact Manny had in this moment, saving lives, preventing harm, and going above and beyond what is expected. Manny did not just follow protocol in a crisis; he made the kind of critical decision that saves lives.
