Nurse Maksim noticed upon his assessment that the patient didn’t look well and was hyperventilating at 30-35 breaths per minute. He quickly checked vital signs and BG, escalating his concerns to the rehab PA. The patient was sent for a CT scan to rule out PE. However, a bigger discovery came through once it was complete- the patient had a new descending thoracic aortic dissection and required urgent surgical intervention. The patient was transferred to the CTICU and immediately started being prepped for the OR. This is an amazing catch by an equally amazing clinician!
