...One day, I happened to be on the third floor Cath Lab Skywalk about 5:15 PM. I found two women who seemed to be looking for something or someone. When I offered to assist, they said they were looking for a nurse, Makenzie Morren, who worked in the Cath Lab. I confirmed that the Cath Lab was closed and shut down for the night and proceeded to ask a few more questions to see if I could help them instead.

It seemed that these women had made a special trip to the hospital to find this nurse because Makenzie had become so important to them over the summer as the one woman described her husband's ordeal. Makenzie had cared for her husband (Mr. H.) on South 4 and had given them outstanding care but it did not stop there. Mr. H. had to be readmitted more than once, spending time on East 7 and Palliative Care Unit. While the care was excellent wherever they went, Makenzie rose above all others. They felt compelled to come and notify Makenzie that Mr. H. had passed away recently.

Mrs. H spoke of how surprised they were to see such caring and compassionate and engaging qualities in a nurse who was so very young. They spoke of Makenzie's qualities to the Palliative Medical Director, stating they thought Makenzie would be an excellent Palliative Care Nurse. Makenzie visited Mr. H and his family all through the summer when he was in the hospital, and helped carry them through their journey. She was always present in the moment and so engaging and perceptive. When a small interest or desire was mentioned in casual conversation, Makenzie would show up the next day with the very item that Mr. H indicated he liked. The patient and family couldn't believe she remembered such a nuance.

After a vacation trip, the family didn't think that anyone would be interested in their photos, but Makenzie insisted she would love to see them. The patient and family obviously believed that Makenzie had connected with them in a special way.

I realize that this is exactly how the two women regarded Makenzie:

Goes above and beyond to make a significant difference

Compassionate and energetic

Creates a sense of family

Kind and sincere

Trustworthy

Passionate about life and her job as a Nurse

After getting permission to get Mrs. H phone and email, I promised to connect with Makenzie the very next day. This interaction made me feel proud of Covenant and how Makenzie represented the essence of nursing.
